Class Information
Overview
Our Turkish language program offers an immersive, culturally rich learning experience that blends grammar with active practice. Instructors use structured drills, interactive exercises, and cultural content like music, theater, and literature, along with fun activities such as games and role-play. This approach builds confidence and competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The program covers all material from the Elementary Turkish textbooks (volumes 1 and 2) by KurtuluÅŸ Öztopçu, providing a complete foundation in Turkish grammar over three years.
Year 1: Beginner
The first year of Turkish language classes for adults covers foundational skills in five stages. The Novice Beginner I level classes focus on the alphabet, pronunciation, greetings, present tense, negation, plural nouns, and basic vocabulary. Novice Beginner II introduces nationalities, colors, occupations, present progressive tense, and key grammatical structures like the dative and genitive cases. Beginner I covers family, home, languages, and cases like ablative and accusative, along with adjectives and negation. Beginner II includes topics like activities, times, cultural events, and more complex grammar such as compound nouns and European loan words. Beginner III delves into sports, shopping, the definite past tense, ordinal numbers, and expressions of necessity.
Year 2: Advanced Beginner
The second year of our Turkish Program focuses on conversational skills and more complex grammar. Advanced Beginner Turkish I covers bargaining, shopping vocabulary, secondary postpositions, future tense, and consonant clusters. Advanced Beginner Turkish II includes conversations about cities, transportation, comparisons, preferences, and weather, along with expressing purpose, the adverbial suffix "-(y)Inca," and a review of question words. Pre-Intermediate Turkish I introduces topics like ordering food, Turkish cuisine, and work-related language, while covering aorist tense, third-person imperatives, and non-future participles. Pre-Intermediate Turkish II teaches personal traits, compound verbs, and phrasal verbs, and Pre-Intermediate Turkish III focuses on Turkish holidays, customs, and social invitations, including the optative mood and relative suffix "+ki."
Year 3: Intermediate
In the third year, our Turkish language students achieve fluency in conversation, expand vocabulary, and master advanced Turkish grammar. Intermediate Turkish I covers literature, daily routines, letter writing, shopping, adverbs of frequency, and time expressions like "önce" and "sonra," along with the adverbial suffix "-(y)Ip." Intermediate Turkish II focuses on renting apartments, booking hotels, medical advice, reflexive pronouns, the future participle "-(y)AcAk," and subject-verb agreement. Intermediate Turkish III includes health, pharmacies, travel vocabulary, reported past tense ("-mIÅŸ"), passive voice, and advanced suffixes. Intermediate Turkish IV covers telephone conversations, politeness markers, the causative mood, and conditional tense. Intermediate Turkish V offers a comprehensive review, preparing students for advanced conversational and written Turkish.
Year 4+: Advanced
The Advanced Turkish classes are for students with a strong grammar foundation and large vocabulary who aim to achieve fluency. These classes focus on advanced fluency and cultural proficiency, preparing students for nuanced discussions and complex interactions in Turkish, including professional work. Topics include reading and analyzing complex texts like news articles and literature, writing structured arguments, debating political and social topics, and expanding vocabulary with advanced terminology. Students also master idiomatic Turkish expressions, proverbs, and colloquial language, promoting critical thinking and self-expression. By the end, students are ready for immersive, real-world experiences and are fluent in professional, academic, and personal conversations in Turkish.
Private
Our private Turkish classes are fully tailored to meet each student's unique needs and learning goals, whether they are absolute beginners, heritage speakers, or advanced learners seeking specialized vocabulary. For heritage speakers, we emphasize grammar fundamentals and writing skills, approaching the language from a heritage speaker’s perspective to bridge any gaps in formal grammar and literacy. For students with specific professional goals, like medical professionals working with Turkish-speaking patients, or academics researching a field that required Turkish language knowledge, we customize lessons to cover technical vocabulary and practical phrases, enabling them to communicate confidently in relevant contexts. Private lessons are adaptable, allowing students to focus on areas of interest.
