Mission
Here at Halbuki Linguist Cooperative, our goal is to contribute to creating a multilingual world. We strive to do this through offering accessible, high-quality language instruction in less commonly taught languages. Our language classes serve a multipronged purpose; proceeds from the classes go to support linguist livelihoods and endangered language revitalization. Our current language offerings include Turkish, Quechua, Russian, Modern Greek, Amharic, and Farsi. Our cooperative offers events free to the public aims at gathering community around language, and improving education about linguistic justice.
What does Halbuki mean?

In Turkish, 'halbuki' (sometimes spelled hâlbuki) means "whereas" or "however" in the context when something turned out to be something other than what it was expected to be initially. For example, the sentence 'I thought that was a bird, but it turned out to be a cat' can be expressed with this word in Turkish like so: Şunu bir kuş sanıyordum, halbuki bir kediymiş. To learn more about this word, check out our Turkish Program Instagram post about it here.
Halbuki encapsulates the spirit of our collective because it is a combination of roots from 3 different languages, Farsi, Turkish, and Arabic, which are all in different language families, and thus contains the beauty of a multilingual society all in one word.
Our
Story

How Halbuki Was Founded
Halbuki was founded by two individuals passionate about preserving language diversity and learning languages, and helping others do the same. What started out as a handful of students learning Turkish in a small apartment in Oakland, has since expanded to teachers and students around the world, from Argentina to India. Our co-founders realized that the unmet demand for language classes in less commonly taught languages can be used to help fund revitalization of endangered languages and support linguists' livelihoods; since then our programs have grown to include 6 languages, fueled by the hope that these efforts can help contribute increasing multilingualism around the world.
