Greek Group Class Levels
Overview

Our Greek language program offers an immersive, culturally rich learning experience through our group classes for adults that blends Greek grammar lectures and drills with active practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in Greek. Our Greek language instructors use structured drills, interactive exercises, and Greek cultural content like music, theater, and literature, along with fun activities such as games and role-play. This approach builds confidence and competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Modern Greek. The Greek program covers all concepts according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Learning Greek as a Foreign Language, providing a complete foundation in Modern Greek language grammar over the course of four years.
Year 1: Beginner Greek (A1)

Novice Beginner I-II, & Beginner I-III.
Year 1 focuses on achieving A1 Greek (Beginner) competency, covering foundational survival skills in Modern Greek. Students master the Greek alphabet, pronunciation, and basic stress rules. Key grammar includes the Greek present tense of common verbs (είμαι, έχω, μένω, κάνω), the difference between the strong and weak personal pronouns, and the use of definite and indefinite articles across all four Greek grammatical cases (Nominative, Accusative, Genitive, Vocative). Students learn to form basic SVO (subject-verb-object) sentences in Greek, use the simple future with θα, and the simple past (Αόριστος) for common Greek verbs. Vocabulary acquisition centers on basic themes: self-introduction, family, professions, time, numbers, food, and giving simple directions in Greek. By the end of the year, students can handle very short, simple conversations, describe their daily routine, and talk about past events and future plans in Greek.
Year 2: Advanced Beginner Greek (A2)

Advanced Beginner I-V.
Year 2 aims for A2 Greek (Elementary) competency, expanding the ability to handle routine tasks and simple information exchange in Greek. The focus shifts to solidifying the Greek Simple Past (Αόριστος) and mastering the Greek Imperfect (Παρατατικός) to distinguish between completed and habitual past actions in Greek. Students learn the Greek Passive Voice for common verbs, practice with modal verbs (πρέπει να, μπορώ να), and expand the use of the Greek Subjunctive mood (να) for wishes and purpose. Grammatical focus also includes the Greek Genitive case for possession and the construction of basic conditional sentences (αν) in Greek. In this year, vocabulary broadens to cover detailed descriptions of people, health, communication technology, education, and expressing nuanced opinions, allowing students to write simple narratives, summarize short news stories, and make appointments or reservations in Greek.
Year 3: Intermediate Greek (B1)

Intermediate I-V.
Year 3 brings students to B1 Greek (Intermediate) competency, making the student an independent Greek language user capable of handling most situations encountered during travel and producing simple connected texts in Greek. Grammatical complexity increases with the full command of the Greek Passive Voice across tenses, the use of the Greek Future Perfect and Pluperfect, and the introduction of advanced Subjunctive forms in Greek. The core focus is on achieving cohesion and coherence through the use of a wide range of Greek conjunctions (cause/effect, contrast) and relative pronouns (ο οποίος). Vocabulary allows for expressing and justifying opinions on abstract topics like social issues, culture, and lifestyle, enabling the student to participate in debates, present structured arguments, and write detailed formal and personal letters in Greek.
Year 4: Upper Intermediate Greek (B2)

Upper Intermediate I-V.
Year 4 targets B2 level Greek (Upper Intermediate), allowing for effective argumentation, spontaneity, and high-level interaction with Greek native speakers. Grammar mastery is achieved through the detailed study of irregular Greek verbs, complex reported speech, and a full understanding of the Greek conditional mood for real and unreal conditions in the past and present. The emphasis is on stylistic variation and achieving a high level of cohesion using advanced linking devices (παρά το γεγονός ότι). Lexically, the student acquires Greek vocabulary for specialized fields (politics, law, economics) and abstract concepts (literature, philosophy). By the end of this year, the student can critique Greek media, write structured reports, and participate fluently and spontaneously in extended discussions on complex and unfamiliar subjects in Greek.
