Overview

Our language program offers an immersive, culturally rich learning experience that blends grammar with active practice. Instructors use structured drills, interactive exercises, and cultural content like music, theater, and literature, along with fun activities such as games and role-play. This approach builds confidence and competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The program follows the Poyehali ('Poekhali'/Поехали) Textbooks for the first 2 years of the classes and a combination of various textbooks and materials hand-picked for our program for the remaining 2 years after that.

Our 8-week Russian language group classes cover Russian grammar fundamentals, writing and reading practice, pronunciation and conversation drills, key vocabulary, taught by experts of Russian as a second language pedagogy. Classes are led by an instructor in real-time online on our online platform, allowing for the same live interaction as in-person classes. Our platform is designed to allow students to engage with each other and the instructor and to practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking the Russian Language.

Year 1: Beginner

This year follows the Poyehali ('Poekhali'/Поехали) textbooks.

Novice Beginner I (Chapters 1–6): Covers cyrillic alphabet and pronunciation, greetings and introductions, countries and nationalities, professions, gender of nouns, singular/plural forms, the verb быть in the present tense, nominative case basics, numbers 1–20, and classroom vocabulary. Students practice asking and answering simple questions.

Novice Beginner II (Chapters 7–12): Family and friends, possessive pronouns, basic adjectives, present tense of common verbs (жить, работать, читать), accusative case (animate nouns), negation with не, and question words (кто, что, где). Students learn to talk about daily routines and simple activities.

Beginner I (Chapters 13–20): Days of the week, telling time, accusative case (inanimate), prepositions в, на, с, expressing location vs motion, more verb conjugations, introduction to aspect, and modal verbs (хотеть, мочь). Vocabulary includes directions, transportation, and leisure activities.

Beginner II (Chapters 21–30): Food and dining, shopping vocabulary, adjectives in nominative/accusative, numbers 20–100, introduction to the genitive case (quantities, possession), polite requests, and introduction to reflexive verbs. Students role-play shopping and ordering in restaurants.

Beginner III (Chapters 31–40): Daily routines in detail, weather and seasons, verbs of preference (любить, нравиться), reflexive verbs continued, past tense formation and usage, and the genitive case with negation. Students practice narrating short stories about their past experiences.

Year 2: Advanced Beginner

This year follows the Poyehali ('Poekhali'/Поехали) textbooks.

Advanced Beginner I (Chapters 41–50): Travel and transportation, motion verbs (идти/ехать) in present and past, prepositions with accusative vs. prepositional, extended family and relationships, comparatives, and introduction to the dative case.

​

Advanced Beginner II (Chapters 51–60): Describing appearance and personality, using adjectives in all cases, reflexive verbs expanded, modal expressions (нужно, можно, нельзя), introduction to the instrumental case (with professions, means of transport).

​

Advanced Beginner III (Chapters 61–70): Talking about past events and experiences, perfective vs. imperfective aspect, hobbies and leisure activities, holidays, and simple narrative connectors (сначала, потом, после этого).

​

Pre-Intermediate I (Chapters 71–85): Future tense (simple and compound), advanced motion verbs (ходить/ездить), prepositions of direction and place, instrumental case expanded, and vocabulary for city life and communication.

​

Pre-Intermediate II (Chapters 86–100): Conditional constructions (бы + past tense), comparisons and superlatives, advanced adverbs, introduction to participles and gerunds, and expressing opinions. Students begin engaging with short texts and dialogues at the A2 level.

Year 3: Intermediate

Finish Поехали! 2.2 (Ch. 101–120) + transition to B1 textbooks ('В пути', 'Жили-были', and others).

Intermediate I (Chapters 101–120): Review and reinforcement of all cases, complex motion verbs with prefixes, reported speech, participles, gerunds, and subordinate clauses.

​

Intermediate II: Vocabulary expansion (media, environment, work, city life), deeper practice with aspect, relative clauses, and expressing opinions in debates.

​

Intermediate III: Prefixal motion verbs in depth, idiomatic expressions, cultural themes, oral narratives, and structured essay writing.

​

Intermediate IV: Advanced connectors, stylistic register (formal/informal), writing formal letters, news/media analysis, and abstract topics.

​

Intermediate V: Authentic readings (short stories, articles), advanced grammar review, conversational fluency, and B1 exam preparation.

Year 4+: Advanced

Textbooks: B2-level courses ('В мире людей', authentic texts, films, and literature excerpts).

Advanced I: Learning and practicing using subjunctive/conditional nuance, complex participles, reported speech, stylistic differences in narration.

​

Advanced II: Reading literature excerpts and cultural analysis, academic vocabulary, argumentative essays, and presentations.

​

Advanced III: Practice discussing, writing and reading about social and political topics, media discussions, irony, idioms, and figurative speech.

​

Advanced IV: Writing reviews and analytical essays, advanced listening (radio, podcasts), and seminar-style discussions.

​

Advanced V: TRKI-II (B2) preparation, independent projects, full-length novels or films, and advanced colloquial Russian practice.

Our private Russian classes are fully tailored to meet each student's unique needs and learning goals, whether they are absolute beginners, heritage speakers, or advanced learners seeking specialized vocabulary. For heritage speakers, we emphasize grammar fundamentals and writing skills, approaching the language from a heritage speaker’s perspective to bridge any gaps in formal grammar and literacy. For students with specific professional goals, like medical professionals working with Russian-speaking patients, or academics researching a field that required Russian language knowledge, we customize lessons to cover technical vocabulary and practical phrases, enabling them to communicate confidently in relevant contexts. Private lessons are adaptable, allowing students to focus on areas of interest.
