While there are some benefits to Duolingo, it's not the fastest way to fluency, and has serious limitation for less commonly taught languages like Turkish, so we want to shine a spotlight on some of our favorite, lesser-known language learning resources that have impressed us with their unique approaches.
1. Lang.Guru (Visit Lang.Guru)
Lang.Guru is an exciting new language learning tool that just came out that is the Duolingo alternative for language nerds. This resource focuses on helping users learn useful everyday language through interactive games and exercises creating a personalized learning path. It was build by linguists (unlike Duolingo) and uses high quality linguist-approved corpuses as the base for the program, which ensure that you will not be learning wrong grammar or useless phrases like so often is the case on Duolingo, especially for less common languages like Turkish.
One of its standout features is the ability to adapt content to your interests, making learning not only effective but also enjoyable. If you’ve ever felt stuck memorizing vocabulary lists, Lang.Guru offers a refreshing alternative. Its contextual approach helps reinforce words and phrases in real-life settings, ensuring that your skills are practical and ready to use. Currently Lang.Guru offers more than 20 languages, including languages not offered by Duolingo, like Bulgarian, Estonian and Czech.
2. Language Reactor (Visit Language Reactor)
For those who love learning through immersion, Language Reactor is a game-changer. This browser extension transforms streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix into powerful language learning tools. It overlays subtitles in two languages simultaneously, allowing you to follow along in your target language while referencing your native language.
Language Reactor also includes features like word lookup, customizable playback speeds, and vocabulary tracking. Whether you’re watching your favorite Turkish soap opera or exploring a documentary in French, this tool turns entertainment into an active learning experience. Learning from TV shows is one of the best ways to learn real-life phrases and native accents if you do not have the opportunity to learn in an immersive setting.
3. Quizlet (Visit Quizlet)
Quizlet has been around for a while, but its versatility often goes underappreciated. As a digital flashcard platform, it’s perfect for reinforcing vocabulary, grammar rules, and cultural tidbits. With features like customizable flashcards, interactive games, and study modes, Quizlet helps you retain information in a way that suits your learning style. It also has a really helpful new tool that let's you practice your vocab by chatting with the AI chat and using the words in sentences while practicing grammar as well.
