Mark is studying Greek to enhance his understanding of Greek music and culture. As a musician, he wants to study directly with Greek instructors who do not speak English, allowing him to gain deeper insights into the art form. Additionally, Mark aims to improve his ability to sing Greek songs authentically, capturing both their meaning and emotion. His goal is to make genuine connections with locals during his travels in Greece, show respect to locals by making an effort to speak their language, and challenge himself intellectually by keeping his mind active. Learning Greek will not only improve his musical journey but also enrich his experiences in Greece.

Claire
Claire first discovered a passion for the Turkish language while studying foreign languages at the University of Arizona. Intrigued by its unique grammar and vocabulary, she later studied abroad at Boğaziçi University and wrote her art history thesis on contemporary video art in Istanbul and Eastern Turkey. Years later, now in graduate school in the US, Claire needs support brushing up on her Turkish to maintain a connection to the Turkish language, and hopes to live in Turkey at some point in the future. We hope this scholarship will support Claire in retaining a connection to Turkey and help her contribute both in Turkey and in other communities in the future in a meaningful way.
