Halbuki Linguist Cooperative, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a group of linguists dedicated to offering language classes in less commonly taught languages to support language revitalization and linguistic justice, with the overall goal of building a more multilingual world. Our cooperative currently provides classes in languages like Turkish, Russian, and Greek, taught by experts in these languages and members of our collective. We also offer language interpretation services. Proceeds from our classes and services support linguist livelihoods, endangered language revitalization, and linguistic justice initiatives.
Location: In-person in Oakland, California (exact location TBD).
Position Overview
Halbuki is seeking a Greek Language Instructor to teach children’s classes in person in Oakland. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching Greek as a second language to children, a background in language pedagogy or linguistics, and fluency in both Greek and English. Knowledge of child-centered learning methods, creativity in lesson planning, and the ability to create an engaging classroom environment are especially important for this role.
Work Schedule and Role Expectations
This role will require leading approximately 1–3 group classes per week in person. Each class will be 1 to 1.5 hours long. The course is taught in 8-week terms, with a one-week break in between each term and a longer summer break (July and August). The position is set to begin this fall. The instructor will be responsible for creating age-appropriate teaching materials, incorporating both language and cultural elements into lessons, and ensuring a fun, supportive, and motivating learning environment. In addition to group classes, there may be opportunities to teach private lessons depending on instructor availability.
Benefits and Compensation
We offer generous hourly pay for teaching hours—more than double that of most competitors—though we are not able to provide other benefits at this time. Key Responsibilities
Deliver engaging, interactive Greek language lessons tailored to children of various ages and levels.
Develop creative, age-appropriate lesson plans that incorporate games, songs, and cultural activities.
Assess students’ progress through observation and informal evaluations, and provide constructive feedback to families.
Create a safe, supportive, and fun classroom environment that encourages curiosity and participation.
Communicate with parents and program administrators about class progress, scheduling, and student needs.
Collaborate with the program director and other instructors to align teaching methods and curriculum goals.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Greek, Linguistics, Education, or a related field preferred.
Language Proficiency: Native or near-native fluency in Greek and working proficiency in English is mandatory.
Teaching Experience:
Mandatory: At least 2–3 years of experience teaching a language, with a strong preference for teaching children.
Highly Preferred: Experience teaching Greek as a foreign/heritage language.Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to adapt lessons to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Professional, responsible, timely, and respectful.
Experience working with children in any capacity (school, camps, tutoring, community programs) is highly preferred.
